As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
